I'm just trying to get how people see things. The way it looks now, people see the successes of MS not due to their own work towards it, but due to the actions and choices of Sony. I disagree with that. While Sony may have opened the door to these possibilities, MS still had to put in effort to get those exclusive deals. Even getting the multiplatform development they've gotten from previous exclusive franchises. All that, though, is really getting away from the original question.
The original question was "Are the successes/gains of MS in the RPG genre causing a decline in the popularity of the RPG genre?" _________________ I hear voices in my head. They council me. They understand. They talk to me.

1) RPG's have been in decline since the ps1 days. Unless it was a pretty big title like FF, no one really cared about rpg's. Its unfortunate, but thats how it is.
2) I think MS's success has alot to do with Sony's poor start, along with Sony still being stupid with their dev kits and making it very difficult to develope a game on the ps3. PS3 just doesnt have the numbers like ps2 did, so personally I think they feel its not worth the effort anymore, especialy with how expensive it is to develope on the ps3 compared to the 360.
Edit:
And why do we keep starting a new thread after 300 pages? _________________

So Raansu, you feel RPG sales would've kept declining even without deals going to MS? _________________ I hear voices in my head. They council me. They understand. They talk to me.

Yes. The sales of smaller rpg's on the 360 are more or less the same as they were on the ps2. Going multiplat, imo, really wouldnt make a big differance. Yeah the sales might be slightly higher, but I really dont think it would make that much of a differance. Especially since RPG's just arnt that popular outside of japan anymore. Everyone wants generic sports and fps titles. Thats just how it is. _________________

I can see why rpg's are not the fan favorites anymore. I think its because of 2 reasons
1. Some people dont want to spend weeks and weeks on end trying to finish one game
2. Lack of orginality or variety in a rpg or lack of balance in a sense. _________________ Blades clashing, blood spattering, the fight is even, what will happen next?

From that article IF posted a while back it appears even the great FF series is seeing a decline in sales. Its been going down hill since FFVII.
Good question.
So. . . are yeti excusable? _________________ "This is exciting stuff, a generational leap that comes at a time when Naughty Dog's competitors have still yet to match the technical accomplishments of its first PS3 title." - Digital Foundry

my theory is attention spans going down. Ppl want quick gratification nowadays, scrubs just rinsing utube and gamefaqs cos they can't be bothered when things get long and dull. . . grinding in some dungeon wouldn't hold them for long.
Soon only headshots and interactive cutscenes with big boobs thrown in somewhere are going to be the norm. _________________ fanboy hurt feelings over consumer electronics is pretty sad. . . and funny getting a reaction out of them.

Well done MS, they could have skipped Japan but they made an effort.

I'm surprised at the low numbers of the PS3. What is the perception of the PS3 to the japanese public at the moment?
Quote:
The Japanese are trying to fight it, but when the 360 is pretty much the only system that has RPGs, there isn't much choice for them. I'm sure a lot of them are cursing to them selves while putting their money on the counter and hating every second of it.
PlayStation 2 set the industry standard for worldwide mass market adoption and is a clear embodiment of our commitment to platforms that deliver 10-year product lifecycles. It's a tribute to outstanding technology, great consumer value and unprecedented development support that we've now been able to do twice what no one else has ever accomplished. . . Just as PlayStation 2 is delivering on a 10-year lifecycle and helped expand and solidify the DVD format for home entertainment along the way, we believe PLAYSTATION®3 offers the same promise by helping secure the Blu-ray format and delivering unprecedented value as the total home entertainment solution for the next decade.
Nintendo's surrender is immanent. Make your time.

now that the PS2's price been reduced, they can release a $499 PS3 with a PS2 bundled in together and call it a fully backwards compatible set

They should sell them duct taped together, for massive damage.

Sony were throwing around "154 million or so shipped" last year. Just more bs confirmed.

Pretty sad that 360 only made 1 million sales in japan after 3 years. Not sure why they resist it so much. 360 seems like it has more games that appeals to that market as well. Maybe it's the RROD.
They should just stop resisting their Microsoft masters. Resistance is futile anyway!

But HSG5 and GT5P probably outsold all those rpgs combined in that region.
edit: Not to mention the true masters are handhelds.

Could it be the PS3 finally gets a rpg from them? That or it could LR again.

I never understood that either. People say its because its an american product, but last I checked, ipod is an american product, and they sell like hotcakes over there. _________________
The 360 doesn't sell well because handhelds are much more important in Japan. To top it off, in Japan Microsoft is still a "new comer". There haven't been many breakout RPGs, etc. If FFXIII were announced as 360 exclusive, it would have an install base in japan double what it is now, no questions asked.
Fact is, Blue Dragon is a poor mans Dragon Quest (and not a great one at that). LR is okay, but still not a Final Fantasy. The Namco RPGs are pretty good, but aren't going to push the system on it's own.
It's easier for a Japanese customer to invest in an overpriced PS3 that they know will have FFXIII than purchase a 360 that won't get that game in that region.
And yes, it's like that. Monster Hunter PSP anyone? _________________ Please keep it under 100k, some people like to use their PSPs and Mobile phones to browse the site.
